Plastic
lightguides find applications in many industries especially where
source must be located some distance from where it must light up
an icon or button. For many years we have been designing lightguides
for the automotive and network communications industries, bringing
our modelling skills and optical knowledge to bear on tricky design
problems.
The
Electronic Climate Control (ECC) in most cars is now lit by a combination
of standard filament lamps and LEDs. Designers often encounter problems
when trying to reconcile the electro-mechanical requirements with
the lighting specification. Colour matching across the main dashboard
often leads to difficulties, this is especially true when using
a mixture of light sources such as LCD, LED and filament lamps.
Network
hubs use multiple surface mount LEDs to indicate the status of the
device or signal strength. The LEDs are usually mounted on a board
that is perpendicular to the display surface. Multiple lightguides
can be used to capture and turn the light through 90° so that
more expensive manufacturing techniques can be avoided.
